Misconceptions About Social Media for Real Estate Professionals
Throughout my time working on the marketing team at a real estate brokerage, I’ve noticed that real estate professionals are really embracing social media or really NOT embracing social media. Connections and word of mouth aside (because that’s huge in the industry), which of those two groups do you think is finding more success long-term?
The use of social media as a marketing tactic can be extremely daunting, but it’s extremely beneficial when you take the pressure off of it and just start doing it. The hesitation seems to stem from several misconceptions about the use of social media as a real estate agent.
It’s All About Luxury
Yes, luxury listings are SO cool to see on social. BUT, the average person is probably not actively looking to buy a luxury home (especially if you fit a similar demographic as I do).
You can (and should) totally share all of your other listings. Here’s two great reasons why:
Show off that you have listings, thus proving your experience and knowledge for any future clients
The more listings you share, the more you’re sharing things on social media in general… which will in return, keep you top of mind as an agent for your followers, as well as help you attract new followers/potential clients since you are posting more consistently.
You HAVE to Make Videos to See Success
Videos have been statistically performing better on social media than static posts as they generate more engagement, and it’s just what’s trending. However, don’t let the statistic scare you away from using social media. Post whatever format of content makes you comfortable and will get you consistently using your social media accounts.
When you’ve reached that point of consistency with posting and comfortability/familiarity with social media, THEN try to start making video content to take your content to the next level.
Listings Are the Only Thing to Post
Listings are a great thing to share on social media, but it’s far from the only thing you can post. Here are some more ideas for content:
Remodeling/staging before and afters
Share definitions of real estate lingo
Talk about why having a real estate agent is beneficial
Share information/take a tour of a neighborhood or pocket of your city
Add some personality to your pages
Business and Personal Have to Remain Separate
This is a misconception that is brought to my attention almost weekly. Agents think that they should either follow the 80/20 rule (80% business, 20% personal) or they should keep their business and personal lives separate altogether. And I say, that’s completely up to you, but it’s not a RULE (of course check the regulations in your state anyway to be aware of them).
Adding some of your hobbies, pets, etc. into your social media content will not only help keep you posting consistently but help humanize you more as a real estate agent. People will start to see and recognize YOU and not just think you are being ‘spammy’ on social media.
In conclusion, what you do with your social media pages is completely up to you. But, there are absolutely ways to make them more successful and enjoyable for you. It all starts with pushing misconceptions out of your mind and just doing it!
