what social platforms will work best for your brand?

You’ve heard me tell you time and time again that your brand needs to have a presence on social media. But before you go create profiles on every social profile there is, you need to strategize first. Not all types of businesses will be successful on every platform. For example, a lot of B2B related businesses aren’t always successful on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, but they do see success on Facebook and LinkedIn.

When considering which platforms to put your business on, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is my target audience?

Think about what platforms your target audience uses on a daily basis…

If your target audience includes middle-aged stay-at-home moms who like to do DIY projects, you’d probably be very successful on Pinterest and you probably want to stay away from LinkedIn.

If you’re targeting C-level employees at Fortune 500 companies, you definitely want to be on LinkedIn. TikTok probably isn’t the best place for you.

If you are a restaurant targeting food lovers in your area, you’ll likely be successful on Instagram because it is a photo-centric app.

If you’re targeting news/media outlets and will be sharing a lot of articles and company updates, you’ll probably be successful on Twitter.

2. What kind of content will I be sharing on social media?

The type(s) of content you’ll be primarily posting are good indicators on which platforms you should be using…

If you’ll be posting primarily video content… try YouTube, Snapchat, or TikTok

If you’ll be posting mainly photos… try Instagram, Facebook, and/or Pinterest

If you’ll mainly be sharing articles and updates… try LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook

If most of your content is going to be short and sweet… try Twitter

3. What are my social media goals? / What KPIs do I want to reach through the use of social media?

Different platforms may be better at helping you reach certain goals…

If you’re looking to go viral, which is a goal I don’t recommend, you’ll probably have the most luck on TikTok.

If you’re looking to gain SEO value, you might want to try Twitter.

If you want to create an engaging community, try Instagram and/or Facebook.

If you’re looking for your content to be widely shared and/or get lots of “views,” Twitter and Pinterest are probably worth looking into for you.

4. How often do I intend to post on social media?

If you only plan to post once a week or a few times per month… LinkedIn may help work in your favor.

If you want to post several times per day, TikTok, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram (stories) could be beneficial for you.

If you’re wanting to post several times per week, you could likely see success on any platform. However, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube may be viable options.

5. How engaged do I plan to be with my audience?

An engaged audience and account will be successful on any platform. But, if you don’t have the time to put in a few hours a day, you could try Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
